Buenos Aires, December 8 (NA) – The Radical Civic Union (UCR) will define its leadership this Friday. Although the succession is not yet resolved, the governor of Corrientes, Gustavo Valdés, sounds like the favorite to replace Martín Lousteau.
In what remains until December 12, radicals from different factions will seek an agreement that allows them to stay afloat and with future prospects, after the shock that was the victory of Javier Milei for the country's most traditional parties.
Delegates from all over the country will meet at the headquarters on Alsina street, in the City of Buenos Aires, to name Lousteau's successor, who has no intention of continuing at the head of the space.
As learned by the Argentine News Agency, the only name that for now has a certain consensus from all sectors is Valdés, who this Wednesday will cease to be governor to take a seat in the Corrienten Senate.
Lousteau's presidency was marked by a strong internal division between those who sought to be an opposition to Milei and those who considered that the best option was to accompany the government.
That discussion was seen in the functioning of the blocs in Congress and also in the electoral alliances of this year: Leandro Zdero (Chaco) and Alfredo Cornejo (Mendoza) agreed with the libertarians, while Valdés, Maximiliano Pullaro (Santa Fe) and Carlos Sadir (Jujuy) chose to form the Provincias Unidas front.
Lousteau, who was sworn in last week as a national deputy, will join the ranks of Provincias Unidas on December 10 and not from the UCR bloc, which was formed with the least reluctant lawmakers to the officialism.
«The president of the party swore in another bloc, it's humiliating,» questioned a radical from Milei's allied wing, who demands a leadership that can «coordinate the blocs and seduce the electorate again» in 2027.
That sector does not rule out supporting Valdés, although they maintain doubts about what the profile of radicalism would be if the Corrientine takes over the National Committee.
«Valdés put his legislators in the UCR bloc, but then he took a photo with Provincias Unidas,» highlighted the source consulted by NA, and expressed: «We have to continue representing the voters of Juntos por el Cambio».
There are 106 delegates from all over the country who will meet in the City this Friday to elect the new leadership for the next four years.
